The 1960s was a time of cultural and social revolution. Setting the Scene explores how the changes impacted the people of Walthamstow.
As Teddy Boys made way for hippies, film footage shows that the Wood Street Walk and Walthamstow Carnival continued to bring the crowds onto the streets. Large new housing projects promised modern homes and the last bomb sites were cleared making way for new shopping parades. Public transport was transformed when the Victoria Line opened in 1968, although some warned: “with progress comes problems”.
Revealing photographs, colour film, art and ephemera from the Museum’s collections, including Ken Russell’s famous photographs, this exhibition is a companion to Be Magnificent. Walthamstow School of Art 1957-1967, on display at the William Morris Gallery.
